This book is a sequel to the author’s earlier “The Cave of the Crystal Skull” (2014). In that first book Sonia discovers a crystal skull in a cave near her house on Black Mountain, near Mt. Shasta. She learns that the skull has healing powers and that there are deeper secrets within the cave. In this sequel she learns much more about the powers of the crystal skull and its protectors within the cave. She learns that she has a vital role to play as guardian of the skull in her outside, everyday world.
These books, aimed at middle-school readers, combine the reality of Sonia’s life—balancing family, friends, and school—with the keeping of a secret that she knows will not be believed. With a touch of the fantastical, there is nonetheless a reality to Sonia’s life that is described in realistic detail to which the reader can strongly relate.
I bought these books for my granddaughters for whom they are ideally suited: imagination and reality, beautifully combined. This second book, “The Guardian of the Crystal Skull”, is a wonderful expansion of the earlier story, written in a manner that evokes healing and caring. In these times that is very much needed and appreciated.
